The University of Art and Design Helsinki gives education and pursues research in the fields of design, motion picture, audiovisual communication, art education and arts. There are five schools and seventeen fields of education and research. The University is the largest art school in Scandinavia : there are nearly 1700 students, 14% of which come from abroad, and 400 teachers. Furthermore, 1700 students participate in extension studies annually and 800 students in the studies at the open university.

Nearly 2600 persons apply to University of Art and Design Helsinki annually, and an average of 9% are accepted as students. A B.A. degree (Arts and Design) takes three years and a M.A. degree (Arts and Design) takes five years. It is also possible to defend a doctorial dissertation: so far more than twenty doctors have taken their degrees.

The Art Education in Finland has a long history; University of Art and Design Helsinki' s predecessor; The School of Sculpture, started in 1871. The institutions history in the years 1871-1973 is illustrated in the work  Invitation from the Future . The University has functionned in its present localities in Arabia´s factory since 1987. The largest project in the University´s history, Lume, the Finnish Centre for Media Research and Development was completed in the summer of 1999. The Media Centre Lume is unique even from a global point of view, it gathers under the same roof students and researchers of film and television, design for theatre, film and television and new media. With Media Centre Lume the Arabianranta area got its own cultural centre where the public will be served by a film and studio theatre, a gallery and an information centre.
