The University of Joensuu was established in 1969. It includes six faculties and nine independent units. The University offers undergraduate and graduate degree in eight different fields:

  • education
  • humanities
  • natural sciences
  • social sciences
  • economics
  • forestry
  • theology
  • psychology.

The University has campuses in Joensuu and Savonlinna. Mekrijärvi Research Station is located in Ilomantsi.

The University relies on its strengths and areas of expertise. Among these are a multi-disciplinary teacher education programme preparing teachers for all levels of the educational system, research and teaching pertaining to forests, other renewable resources and the environment, and proficiency in the development and application of high technology. The University is also a recognised centre for research on the social and cultural development of the European peripheral areas and border regions.

The University has over 7200 students, 1200 of whom are on the Savonlinna campus. Every year approximately 1300 new students are admitted. The staff comprises about 1200 people, of whom 130 work on the Savonlinna campus.
