The campus-based University of Stirling was founded by Royal Charter in 1967 on the historic Airthrey Estate, close to Bridge of Allan and two miles from the centre of Stirling , which received city status in the Queen's Golden Jubilee year. Set in the shadow of the Ochil Hills, the campus is situated on a magnificent 310 acre estate, centred around a large loch and the 18th century Airthrey Castle .

The Mission of the University of Stirling is to pursue research and scholarship at an international level of excellence and to provide flexible and innovative programmes of teaching and learning in an attractive and vibrant environment. The University strives to meet these aims through:

  • the delivery of flexible and high quality teaching and learning programmes. the support of research at nationally and internationally recognised levels of excellence, meeting economic, social and cultural needs;
  • the broadening of educational opportunity, opening up higher education in innovative ways to the benefit of society as a whole;
  • the maintenance and enhancement of an attractive, supportive, caring and social environment for staff and students;
  • the accessibility of its expertise, services and facilities to the local and wider community.

The University is organised academically into four Faculties: Arts, Human Sciences, Management, and Natural Sciences. Stirling has established itself as a major University with a fine reputation for teaching supported by an active research culture.
